Coach Kayiranga summons 40 players ahead of Cecafa Women Challenge Cup

Posted on Apr 14 2018

Coach Jean Baptista Kayiranga has summoned forty players to begin immediate preparations ahead of next month’s CECAFA Women Challenge Cup which will be staged in Kigali, Rwanda.

The tournament runs from May 11-22 and will attract teams from eight countries, namely; Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti and hosts Rwanda. Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan are yet to confirm their participation.

The 40 players have been called up for a pre-selection stint which will be conducted between April 15-18, 2018 at Stade de Kigali and Ferwafa turfs respectively.

Coach Kayiranga told Ferwafa.rw on Saturday, “All summoned players will join camp on Sunday. We will then hold training sessions from April 15 to 18 with an aim of having a final 30-woman squad which will return back to camp next week to fully concentrate on intensive preparations prior to the final tournament,”

Kayiranga further added that players were picked after a nationwide scouting mission carried from last week aimed at looking for players that can make the team that will be challenging for CECAFA Women Challenge Cup.

Kayiranga and his fellow technical members will further watch women football league matches scheduled this weekend in Rubavu when Scandinavia takes on Inyemera, Kamonyi and Gakenke in Remera Rukoma and Bugesera Wfc against AS Kigali Wfc in Kamabuye respectively.

Except for Tanzania-based Mukamana Clementine who plies her trade with Kigoma Wfc, the rest of the summoned players will join camp at Hotel Hill Top on Sunday night after their club commitments in the on-going Women football league.

At the 2016 edition in Uganda, She-Amavubi, then under the tutelage of Grace Nyinawumuntu, was eliminated in the group stage after defeats to Tanzania and Ethiopia.

Tanzania won the trophy after defeating Kenya in the final while Ethiopia overcame hosts Uganda to take third place.
