Rwanda reveals final CHAN squad

Posted on Jan 07 2016

The Rwanda national team, Amavubi head Coach Johnathan McKinstry has announced his locally-based 23-man squad which will compete at the 2016 African Nations Championship in Rwanda from January 16 to February 7.

McKinstry kept confidence in the majority of players who were key in last year’s Cecafa Challenge Cup tournament were Rwanda finished second following a 1-0 loss to Uganda in the final.

In the final squad, APR Fc are the outfit providing most players for the Amavubi with nine representatives named in the final group, while Police Fc has seven, followed by Rayon Sports with three, Mukura VS has two while SC Kiyovu and AS Kigali has one players each called-up for international duty.

Players who didn’t make the final 23-man squad include; Kevin Muhire (Rayon Sport), Songa Isaie (Police Fc), Marcel Nzarora (Police Fc), Muhadjiri Hakizimana (Mukura VS), Alexis Ngirimana (SC Kiyovu), Mohamed Mushimiyimana (Police Fc), Djuma Nizeyimana (SC Kiyovu), Ivan Senyange (Gicumbi) and Jean Paul Havugarurema (SC Kiyovu).

Speaking to Ferwafa.rw on Thursday, Amavubi head coach Johnathan McKinstry said, “Both the coaching staff and I are pleased with the final list of 23 that we have been able to put together following the last few weeks training camp,”

“It was very difficult to assign the last few places in the squad as all 32 players have worked tirelessly over recent weeks; and as such some were naturally disappointed to have just missed out,”

“Ultimately, we considered a range of factors in decided who was selected and who wasn’t. This included things like technical and tactical ability, physical fitness and stamina, and performance during training camp in both sessions and the games that we have played,”

“It is never easy to tell players that they will not be part of the tournament but I would like to thank them for all their efforts and have also assured them that we will continue to monitor their progress for future camps,”

He further added, “As for the 23 selected. All Rwandans can be confident that they will give everything they have in pursuit of top performance. And when they do that, I am confident we will not be far away from maximising our potential at CHAN 2016,”

Rwanda face DR Congo in a FIFA friendly tie due at Umuganda Stadium, at 16:00. This game will be the last rehearsal for the hosts before they compete in the Africa Nations’ Championship tournament due to kick-off on January 16 at Amahoro stadium.

Rwanda is expected to launch their continental campaign against Cote d’Ivoire on January 16 and will then face their other two Group A opponents, Gabon and Morocco.
