The celebration of International Women’s Day in Rwanda’s Northern Province marked with exciting women’s football matches held at Ubworoherane Stadium on this 08th March 2026, where leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing gender equality in sports.
Speaking during the event, the Governor of the Northern Province, Maurice Mugabowagahunde, pledged stronger support for the development of women’s football in Musanze District.
He emphasized that the district should not lag behind in promoting women’s participation and competitiveness in football.
“We will do everything possible to ensure that Musanze also has a strong and competitive women’s football team. Our district should not be left behind in promoting gender equality through football,” Governor Mugabowagahunde said.
The matches were attended by several leaders including the Governor of the Northern Province, the Mayor of Musanze District, members of the National Women’s Council in Musanze, the Director General in charge of Sports Development Gilbert Manirakiza, and officials from Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) led by President Fabrice Shema Ngoga.
On the pitch, the U20 match between ATEFOP and Nemba TSS ended in a goalless draw (0–0). The main match featured Rayon Sports WFC against Police WFC. After a 0–0 draw in regular time, Police WFC triumphed 5–4 in a penalty shootout.
Teams received prizes including cash rewards and training equipment such as footballs, which will support young girls, especially emerging talents in continuing to develop their football skills.
The event highlighted the growing commitment of national and local leaders to strengthening women’s football and creating more opportunities for young female players across Rwanda.
