FERWAFA Strengthens Safeguarding through Workshop for Umuri Foundation Coaches

On 20 August 2026, FERWAFA conducted a safeguarding workshop for 20 female and male coaches from Umuri Foundation under the theme “Building Safer Football Environments for Children and Young People”, with the motto “Football for Good.”

Among the topics tackled, recognising and preventing abuse, neglect, bullying and exploitation; appropriate conduct and boundaries between coaches and young players; creating positive and respectful coaching environments; identifying safeguarding concerns; and the importance of proper reporting and response mechanisms.

These areas reflect FERWAFA’s broader commitment to strengthening safeguarding across football and ensuring that those working directly with young players are equipped to protect their wellbeing.

Speaking during the session, Mr. Jimmy Mulisa, Founder of Umuri Foundation, highlighted the responsibility of coaches in protecting and positively influencing young players:

“Football is more than a game; it is a powerful tool for shaping lives. As coaches, we are entrusted with the wellbeing of young people. If football is to be truly ‘Football for Good’, every child must feel safe, respected, heard and valued.”

The workshop reaffirmed that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and that creating safe environments is essential to ensuring football remains a force for positive development and social change.
