The FIFA Women’s Football Campaign held on Saturday, Dec 13 in Gicumbi District attracted over 90 young girls in the U13 and U15 categories.
The event held at Munyinya Pitch brought together 96 girls representing U13 and U15 academies namely, Inyemera, Freedom, Burera, and Queens Seeds, to showcase their talent, passion, and potential in football.
Held under the theme “Girls Kicking Goals, Breaking Barriers,” the campaign emphasized the transformative power of football in empowering young girls, building confidence, and nurturing the next generation of female footballers.
The initiative, implemented by FERWAFA in partnership with FIFA, aims to mobilize more girls to embrace football, enhance their skills, and access structured development pathways from a young age, both on and off the pitch.
Following a competitive mini-tournament, Inyemera WFC emerged champions in the U13 category with 7 points, while Burera WFC claimed the U15 title, also finishing with 7 points.
Speaking during the event, the She-Amavubi legend, Ms. Nyiramariza Consolée delivered an inspiring message, sharing her personal journey through football.
“Football supported my education through my former team, Inyemera. I continued to university, became a medical doctor, got married, and succeeded in life. Football did not stop me from achieving my dreams, it helped me achieve them,” she said, encouraging girls to believe that sport and education can go hand in hand.
Mrs. Vivian Kaitesi, the Vice President of FERWAFA’s women’s football commission also praised the involvement of parents and guardians at the event.
“It is encouraging to see parents accompanying their girls as they come to play and develop their talents,” she noted, urging young players to remain committed to their studies while pursuing football.
The FIFA Women’s Football Campaign is a global initiative designed to promote girls’ participation in football at grassroots level. It focuses on access, inclusion, education, and inspiration, using football as a tool to break social barriers, promote gender equality, and create lifelong opportunities for girls within and beyond the sport.
Through such initiatives, FERWAFA and FIFA continue to strengthen the foundation of women’s football in Rwanda, fostering inclusivity and equal opportunity
