FERWAFA hosts Safeguarding training workshop for Youth football clubs

In line with recommendations from FIFA regarding the protection of under-age players, FERWAFA has today, Friday 20th February 2026 organized and delivered a one-day safeguarding training specifically designated for the U17 and U20 Boys and Girls teams set to compete in the upcoming FERWAFA under-age competitions.

The initiative brought together designated safeguarding representatives from each team, reinforcing the federation’s commitment to ensuring that young players compete in safe, supportive, and protective environments both on and off the pitch.

The sessions were dedicated to the U17 Boys and Girls teams. Discussions centred on safeguarding principles, child protection policies, prevention strategies, and clear reporting mechanisms.

Participants examined the shared responsibility of coaches, team staff, and federation officials in protecting young athletes from any form of harm, abuse, or exploitation. The importance of creating a culture of trust, respect, and accountability within team environments was strongly emphasized.

The session was facilitated by FERWAFA’s employee who is also a FIFA Safeguarding expert and focal person, Mrs. Mireille UWINEZA, who underscored that safeguarding is fundamental to sustainable football development.

“Safeguarding is about protecting the dreams of our young players. When children feel safe, they perform better, grow with confidence, and truly enjoy the game. It is all in the interests of football to ensure every child plays safely.”

This initiative reflects FERWAFA’s alignment with FIFA’s safeguarding framework and its broader mission to promote integrity, accountability, and player welfare within Rwandan football.

By strengthening safeguarding structures ahead of the upcoming under-age competitions, the federation continues to demonstrate that development is not measured solely by trophies, but by the safety, dignity, and holistic growth of its young athletes.

As the U17 and U20 Boys and Girls teams prepare to compete in the upcoming FERWAFA under-age competitions, one message stands firm: success begins with safety. Through proactive safeguarding measures, FERWAFA is ensuring that every young player steps onto the field protected, empowered, and ready to thrive.
